Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder-Homemade Fixes

An extremely important and easy fix is to find the perfect location for your squirrel proof bird feeder.  The feeder should be far enough from buildings, railings, trees and any other objects that squirrels can jump down from.   This will help eliminate overhead attacks on your bird feeder.

For those cute little flying squirrels that drop in on the top of your bird feeder install a squirrel proof bird feeder baffle over your bird feeder.  This is a cone-shaped baffle that can easily be made out of hard plastic or metal.  A baffle (inverted) at the bottom of the bird feeder will work to deter them from climbing up the pole to get at the seed.  Another thing that helps to stop climbing squirrels is using a pole made out of PVC pipe so those crafty critters will get no traction on their potential climb to the squirrel proof bird feeder

A squirrel proof bird feeder secured to a wire away from buildings and trees is a great way to dissuade squirrels from climbing and jumping.  They still could walk or run across the wire to get to the squirrel proof bird feeder, but by stringing plastic soda bottles, PVC tubing or LP records on the wire this will make it very difficult for them to continue along the wire.

A simple way to a squirrel proof bird feeder is to fill it with seeds that are not the squirrels favorites.  Safflower seeds, thistle seeds, and suet are good choices.

And, a last resort is to set-up a separate feeder for the squirrels away from your squirrel proof bird feeder.  Feed them their favorite foods like peanuts, other nuts and sunflower seeds.

Usually, one or two of these homemade fixes will help your have a squirrel proof bird feeder.  Enjoy your bird watching!
